About The Book
This work is in two sections. One section provides information that can aid
the adult who has the delicate task of helping a child cope with the loss of a family member, friend, pet, or having to cope with the breakup of a family. The other section, which has the most adorable-looking children illustrated, allows children the opportunity to explore and articulate feelings. This is a "must" book for any adult who interacts with children. This book is for any parent or adult, no matter his beliefs. This book espouses no religious practice or belief. Dr. Jaffe was very sensitive to this issue. Her book's focus is very clear--helping children cope with grief. The activities are ones that can help the child constructively express his/her feelings about the loss. Some activities incorporate individual family religious traditions; others do not. However, the purpose of the book is quite clear--helping parents and adults support children who are coping with grief.
Dr. Jaffe wrote this book out of necessity when she had to help her son cope with the loss of her dear mother-in-law and his grandmother, Nanny. Dr. Jaffe shares one such activity that her family practices long since the passing of Nanny:
Nanny died on the 5th night of the Jewish Festival of Lights, Chanukah,
when customarily the 5th candle is lit…. According to Jewish tradition, because
she died on this day of Chanukah, this candle will never burn out; it will
shine for her forever. Knowing this religious belief was very comforting for
Alex when he was seven years-old, on succeeding Chanukahs, we have always said
a special prayer for Nanny on the 5th night of this holiday. We light a special
candle…in her honor…and she is with us again.

Reviews
"I think it [For the Grieving Child: An Activities Manual] is
a perfect resource explaining the grieving process to those of us who are not
professionals. The section on 'comforting the comforter' is a very important
section that deserves several readings.
"Thank you again...I hope that you will publish again with the sense of clarity and heart realized in For the Grieving Child."

"Help comfort a child with FOR THE GRIEVING CHILD: AN ACTIVITIES MANUAL...
The colorfully illustrated book, written by Dr. Suzan Jaffe of Aventura
[FL], explains grief and how exercise, music or something as simple as a hug
can be helpful. The activities focus on emotions through drawing, coloring
and writing. In the section for adults, which should be read first, topics
include safety issues, depression and the grieving process."
