This work is a collection of poems from the first-half
of the author's twenty-ninth journal. The poems have a variety of subject matter.
Common topics are nature, music, art, and spirituality, but they are not all
typical flower and romance poems. Mood and tone can be light or fall into a
darkness. On the darker side, some express the struggles of severe depression
and addicition.
Some poems are based on the author's personal experience. In others the author
approaches a topic from a another's point of view.
This work would be excellent for any program working with young women who are striving to cope with depression and addiction. Ms. James's poetry can help women, who have been abused and have had to fight the abuse of depression and addiction, to find their voices, articulate their discovery, and establish a level of understanding with those who sincerely want to help.
Sample Poems
imagination and remembering
- remembering
is like a thin long woman
her strange shadow lingering
behind her
in the street at night
the street lamp lights
give her an other-worldly glow
like a green ghost
like a gifted spirit
she is beautiful and charming
her smile rises in happiness
her frown is ugly as sin
- imagination
is like a mischievous tiny man
packed full of muscle
a spy moving around
slyly
he peeks around a corner
hurries ton hide in an alley
watching - waiting
he is dressed in black
trying to remain unseen
but the whites of his eyes shine
shine like diamonds
his pupils are black gold
shrinking and enlarging
dilating
back and forth
crossing over is hard
forth delusional and diluted ones
he holds his breath
is stiff and still
has someone seen him
- remembering
touches his should softly
he jumps out of himself
- this is the meeting place
two ideas become one
- neither one exists independently anymore
this is a monster
- a blob
supernatural
able to take on both worlds
- luckily it is peaceful
it looms in the darkness
terrified of the light
- like secret lovers
combined in an act
and afraid of being caught
- exactly
- it becomes a new night
gives birth to new conclusions
during the conception
- yes.
yes. yes.
Hemingway Christmas Dream
Dreams-
Hemingway at the typewriter
copy of "For Whom the Bell Tolls"
rough draft-first full copy
already in paperback
it is Christmas
tea is served in the cafeteria/dining room/mess hall
Hemingway just sits and stares into space
depressed
depressed out of his mind
the war is on also
us soldier student orphans
run around emptily
or sit in the fullness of nothing
it is a sad holiday
Hemingway will soon commit suicide
then what will we have here
but his words
-Dream
